Party follow up

Last week's post on the rumored underage drinking party in town generated a record (for CambridgeSprings.net) four comments. Thanks to community members for their involvement and for providing additional information about the situation. I read in the Erie Times-News last week that Cambridge Springs police did charge six juveniles with underage drinking after receiving a tip about a drinking party. There was no mention in the police blotter about drugs being involved.

One comment noted that I needed to get out of my basement, walk around town, and talk to my neighbors more. It's worth noting that I look at this blog as an easy way to talk with my neighbors. For example, I could have walked up to someone in town and said: "Did you hear the rumor that there was an underage drinking and pot party?" and maybe they would have said, "That's not true, there wasn't any pot there." Or, I could do what I did and post the information on this blog, and let people chime in with their comments.

Really, what's the difference?

As far as this whole situation goes, coming from someone who is looking in from the outside, there are hundreds of rumors going around, screaming parental/political scandal, some people being reprimanded, others not, a police conspiracy, etc. etc. etc. Rumors like this always seems to be the case in small towns when something like this happens... I know a little something about nasty, hurtful rumors first hand, and when the rumors involve you... well, let's just say it's hard to shrug them all off, but regardless, they're an inevitability. Before long, people will be saying their were hookers at the party, freshman doing heroin, and that the policeman was taking shots of liquor with the kids. It's just a part of living in a small town where everyone knows everyone.

As for the kids themselves, I know some of them - not well really, being a little older - but they seemed like nice kids. It's a shame when something happens like this, but when you do something illegal, you have to know it's possible you'll get caught and there will be consequences. Sometimes we forget we're not invincible and the world doesn't revolve around us - and that's when we have to learn the hard way. And I guess learning the hard way is what life is all about.

P.S. Very honored to see my blog under the "Cool Blogs" label. Woohoo!

I know of your troubles, Jonathan, and I admit I believed many of those rumors I first heard and much of what was said about you, even if I did not really know you personally. As time has passed and emotions have calmed, my perspective has completely changed from that initial reaction. Every time I run into you, whether at the grocery store or the gas station, you always have a smile and a nice "hello" and I only hear the kindest remarks about you now. Only a few years earlier, I fell to these rumors and considered you a villain of some sort. For that, I am sorry.

It's a shame more people could not have learned from your experience though and they continue to do it and tempt fate, even when they have seen first hand what can happen. What is it about alcohol that excite children so much? What is this lure? When will they sit back and realize how utterly childish and pointless it really is? Like you said, people just need to learn for themselves.

Who am I to judge anyway?
