Taxes
My property taxes are high.
My (local) personal income tax rate is high (1.9 percent).
The only way that I see to cut these taxes is to cut services.
Are there any services that Cambridge Springs borough residents receive for their tax dollars that could be cut?

There's always some wasteful project going on - sometimes it feels like our government can't help themselves.
Anyways, this is more of a cheap plug for a new Erie Forum than anything else, but enjoyed the blog and best of luck.
Here's an idea: change the state law that says districts have to provide transportation to school for kids. Make parents/guardians do the driving. Think of all the savings in bus contracts/fuel costs!
Anonymous...How many parents are actually at home when their kids get on or off the bus? For most families, it takes at least 2 incomes to keep the lights on, house heated, kids fed and gas in the car. Requesting parents to drive their kids back and forth to school isn't realistic unless school hours are extended to match work hours or schools are mandated to provide before/ afterschool care in the school buildings... by that point, the money saved by eliminating bussing will be spent of additional staff salaries, utilies for keeping school building open longer, increased materials needed, etc. Without transportation, we'll end up with a lot of kids not getting an education.
I say we make the school staff work more hours for the same pay. Maybe we should even extend the school year so our kids can keep up with the Chinese. It's time to think differently, Penncrest. Put our tax dollars to work!
Who designed that Erie Forum. My 3 year old designs better websites. Makes GoErie look like a modern art masterpiece.
All of the comments deal with school taxes...what services could be cut to deal with local tax issues: snow plowing, police, leaf collection and plowing of the sidewalks. These are the only ones that impact the budget!
How about instituting a $50 per pupil bus fee for all students living within two miles of the school and all students in grades seven and up? I actually lived in a town that did this and it worked quite well.
They also had fees for school activities considered "outside the educational program" such as math league, band, student council, yearbook and intramural sports. It was $25 per pupil per activity, with a cap of $500 for a family...and this was over 8 years ago.
It is unfair to continually ask people who don't have children in the school system to pay higher and higher taxes.
